Hot Melt Form Selector: Film, Web, Powder or Granule
The form of a hot melt adhesive is fixed by two things: the equipment on your line and whether the finished part has to breathe. Answer both questions and the selector returns the form that fits, with the reason taken from the supply-form matrix on our adhesive bonding page.
Two Questions About Your Line
1. What feeds the adhesive on your line?
Pick the machine that puts the adhesive onto the substrate, not the press that bonds the layers afterwards.
2. Does the finished part have to breathe?
Breathable textiles and nonwoven laminates must let air through the bond; a joint that needs full coverage takes a closed layer.

How the Selector Decides
The selector reads the same matrix buyers use on the adhesive bonding page. Each form covers the joint in a different way, and that coverage decides whether air gets through.
| Form | How it covers the joint | Air and moisture vapour | What feeds it on your line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Film | One continuous layer, on release paper or unsupported | Blocked by the closed layer | Flat-bed presses and roller lines, fed from the roll |
| Web | Fibers laid as an open nonwoven net | Passes through the open pores | Presses and roller lines, fed from the roll |
| Powder | Particles scattered or printed as paste dots | Passes between the dots or scattered particles | Scatter coaters and rotary-screen paste-dot lines |
| Granule | Heated to liquid first, then laid down by the coating head | Set by the pattern the coating head lays down | Melt tanks, extruders and coating heads |
What the Selector Cannot Tell You
The form is half of the choice. The grade inside that form still has to fit the temperature window of your line and the substrate pair you bond, and a trial on your own press and line speed settles that. Before you ask for samples, run the Bonding Conditions Checklist and map time against temperature with the Rate–Heat Bonding Compass.
Width, thickness, release liner construction and grade are all specified per order, so tell us the width your line runs when you ask for samples.
